The day after expiration
If you haven't completed your renewal, you must stop performing any activity that requires a license as soon as your current license expires. That includes a renewal you submitted but couldn't complete because your CE wasn't done.
Your record will show Expired-Renewable. That status means the license can still be renewed.
The $100 late fee
KREC charges a $100 late fee on top of the normal renewal fee ($125 salesperson, $175 broker) for any renewal submitted after the expiration date.
One detail catches people: submitting your renewal on time doesn't avoid the fee if your CE is late. KREC's FAQ is explicit that submitting by your expiration date but meeting the CE requirement after it still results in the late fee.
The six-month limit
An expired license must be renewed within 6 months of expiration. Miss that and the license is forfeited: its status changes to Expired, it can no longer be renewed or reactivated, and you must reapply for a license.
Getting back to active, fastest path
- Finish your 12 hours, including the Kansas Required Core. Your school reports completions to KREC — see who reports your CE.
- Submit your renewal in the KREC Public Portal and pay the renewal fee plus the $100 late fee. You can submit before your hours appear on your record; KREC completes the renewal once the CE is on file.
- Watch for the confirmation email, which KREC sends with an updated pocket card within 48 hours. No email usually means the renewal is on hold — contact KREC.
If you can't finish CE by your date
KREC gives you two options: renew late once the hours are done (and pay the late fee), or renew to inactive status by your expiration date, which requires no CE now. Inactive means you can't practice, and the hours must be made up before you reactivate — see reactivating an inactive license.
If you're a supervising or branch broker
If a supervising or branch broker doesn't renew by their expiration date, another broker must take over (form REC-450). Otherwise every affiliated licensee has to move to another company or go inactive, and the company must close (form REC-440).
