The rule
From KREC: CE completed on the same day as a successful license renewal applies only to that renewal cycle and does not carry over. To make sure CE is credited to your next cycle, KREC asks you to wait 24 hours after your renewal has been successfully processed before completing more CE.
Why it matters
Some licensees finish their 12 hours, renew, and immediately start on the next cycle's courses to get ahead. Under this rule, anything completed that same day lands in the cycle that just closed — where it's surplus — instead of the new one. You'd still need a full 12 hours credited to the new cycle.
Two examples
- Renewed Tuesday, took an elective Tuesday evening: that elective counts toward the cycle you just renewed. It won't appear as credit for the next cycle.
- Renewed Tuesday, confirmation arrived, took the elective Thursday: it counts toward your new cycle, as intended.
How to know your renewal went through
KREC emails a renewal confirmation with an updated pocket card within 48 hours of submission. Waiting for that email before starting next cycle's CE is the simplest way to stay clear of the rule. If it doesn't arrive, your renewal may be on hold — contact KREC.
Don't confuse it with reporting timing
This rule is about when you complete a course. It's separate from when your school reports it (within five calendar days, or by your expiration date if that's sooner). You can submit your renewal before your final hours are reported; KREC completes it once the CE is on file.
